Rodeos & Wedding Season are upon us!  There must be something in the water up here because I have almost as many weddings to attend as I do rodeos this summer. What is a DRB Bucking Horse Futurity?

Dirty Rotten Bucker's Inc. Mission Statement:
Our mission statement at Dirty Rotten Bucker's is to produce a Bucking Horse contest to find out what young horse in the country is the best. This contest will consist of Bareback horses that are 4 years and younger, and the Saddle Bronc horses are 5 years or younger. In this contest we will also be determining what cowboy can ride these horses the best. While doing this, we will bring people and families together to have fun and enjoy the contest.

Exactly Where I'm Supposed to Be

A while ago I was rushing to an appointment.  Over scheduled and running behind. 
When I reached the exit on fumes I decided that I had better fuel up or I'd be walking home.
Of course, this close to home, you run into acquaintances that want to visit.  Running even later now, I hop in my car and head out.  
Construction....great...just what I need.  As I am crossing the contruction filled overpass, I see a boy holding a sheep with a halter.  In the midst of all the construction cones was a sheep!  I did a double take in disbelief as I drove by.

As soon as my gaze turned forward again in the distance I would see a band of sheep headed straight towards me!!!! The herd was preparing to cross the overpass and even in my rush to make my appointment...I could see there was no use in trying to go through.  I pulled my car to the side of the road and  hopped out to make a wing and the help the herders keep the band moving.

That little traffic jam had been just the obstacle that I needed to slow my mind down and focus on the reality of the matter.  "I am exactly where I am supposed to be" I would arrive to my appointment when I got there.  No amount of worrying or rushing in my mind would improve the situation.  They only thing worrying would accomplish for sure was ...ruining the enjoyment I could have along the beautiful drive through Medicine Lodge.

 As the band of sheep passed me on the trail, I continued on to my appointment.  This time, I was not rushing.  I had more than enough time. The trip through Lower Lodge was beautiful.  When I arrived to my appointment we actually got more done than I had even planned on. 


Thankful for every obstacle & blessing in my beautiful Medicine Lodge drive and the valuable lessons learned from construction and a band of sheep! 
Ability to Delight in the Present and I am exactly where I am meant to be! Thank you so much for traveling the gypsy trail with me today!  Hope you enjoyed our little detour .

Starting and Training Cowdogs with Rodney Hopwood Clinic

This past weekend, I had the privilege to attend  the “Starting and Training Ranch Dog Clinic with Rodney Hopwood” at the Martiny Ranch.  What a great weekend with family and friends! I tried to soak up as much knowledge as my little brain could hold.  Today, I’m going to share a glimpse of my notes, and a few of tips I picked up throughout the day.  THANK YOU so much to Rodney for sharing his knowledge and patience with any question.

I will be very honest with you…..until my dog (Woodrow)  stepped into the “Work Pen”  I wasn’t listening like I should have been.  Well, the second we entered the “Small Pen”, and I realized that I needed most of the training to stay out my dog's way….my hearing improved immensely.  
Here are a few pictures of Woodrow in action bring some calves back to me.

 One on One with Woodrow (applicable to STARTING most Cow Dogs)
* Set up situation like the small pen.  Small area, gentle cattle, tight fence. ~ Get SMOOTH
*Work on stopping or downing Woodrow.   Maybe can use the palm of your hand held out as a cue to STOP (Woodrow is a Corgi so we will probably just Stop instead of Down)
* Commands: Keep individual commands.  Don’t use the same command for multiple meanings
  • Stop or Down 
  •  Left/Right
  • Bite
  • That will do (completion command)
*Work to the outside of the fence
*Stay to the perimeter of the fence initially.  Build confidence and get them comfortable  close to the fence. 
Every win builds confidence.  Let your dog win.  When you give them a job, don’t  take it away.  
*Owner needs most of  the training to get out of Woodrows way ;)
Now that my ears had been opened, I started taking much better notes and asking questions!

Here are some  Key Points to Remember:
* Keep your dog locked up: Tie up or kennel your dog unless you are working them. 
When you let them out, your dog should be dragging you to that work pen. They will be thinking about working and listening better when they haven’t been running loose with no control.
* Good Manners:  Having a basic handle on your dog such as not jumping up on people and being broke to lead with basic handle.
* Down or Stop: It is key to have some "Whoa" on your dog.  Whether you  use a “Down” or a “Stop” command you need to be able to control your dogs actions.
 *Don’t “cheap shot”.  Don’t allow your dog to cheap shot bite your cattle.  It gives mixed signals to your cattle.  When cattle are moving, don’t let your dog nip at them down the alley way.  When they are moving you should give relief and that rewards & trains your livestock for good behavior. 
Also, when you curb the cheap shots your dog should bite harder and more deliberate when they do bite.


* Commands: Keep individual commands.  Don’t use the same command for multiple meanings. Here are some command examples:
Stop or Down
Left/Right
Bite
"That will do" ~ Rodney also uses a completion command when he is done working his dog for the day. 
* Balance: Move to one side or the other to cue your dog where you want them to go. 
You are striving to achieve BALANCE.  Get on the other side of the stock to stop the movement of the cattle.  Work until you find your balance.  It will vary for each dog. 
* Give your Dog a JOB: 
Give your dog a job and let him do it.  Give him a job for the day that will benefit what you are trying to do.
Put him on the back and give him a job.  Whatever job you give him, let him do it and don't take it away.

Start in a Small Pen:   ( Tools~ sorting stick,  about a 15ft rope on your dog, about 300 lb dairy calves)
Set up situation like the small pen.  Small area, gentle cattle, tight fence. ~ Get SMOOTH
Small pens allows for you to put pressure on your dog and they can figure out where to move.  The snow fence or whatever you use to make your pen solid allows you to apply pressure without your dog running out of the pen and developing bad habits of aborting the task.

Small pen should be closed in so a dog can’t get out.  Work to the outside of the pen.  Work keeping your dog in between you and fence.  Teaching to go into corners.  Not letting them go out of the alley, bad habit or weakening.

Big Pen Work:  (Tools: Sorting stick and about a 25ft rope on your dog)
Move to one side or the other to cue your dog where you want them to go. 
You are striving to achieve BALANCE.  Get on the other side of the stock to stop the movement of the cattle.

Outside or real large pen:
Showing how you would work outside or trailing cows.  Implementing all the tools learned in the  smaller pens.  Seasoned dogs will learn where to be and not waste steps.   For example, Once calf committed to come back to the herd the dog pulled up and gave relief.
 

5 Key Points to Remember:
* Keep your dog locked up
* Good Manners:
* Down or Stop:
* Balance
* Give your Dog a JOB

Judy Wagner's Ranchgrownlogic

Today, I wanted to share an amazing woman that is near and dear to my heart, Ms Judy Wagner.  She is strong.  She is beautiful.  She is a leader.  She is a trail blazer.  She is all heart.  Judy has always been a talented writer and motivator, but recently she has been publishing her works to encourage, inspire, and lead by Ranchgrownlogic!

Judy was kind enough to take the time to share a glimpse of her story with us.  Here is ranchgrownlogic and a little bit about the beautiful woman behind the scenes.
History: A little background on where & how you were raised.
I grew up on a ranch in western Montana.  The oldest of seven brothers and sisters.  We shared chores, love and laughter, hardships and pain. We learned to count on each other and to navigate through the storms with resiliency and encouragement.
We lost our father in a tractor accident when I was 16. You learn to grow up fast.  I know how it feels to hear a calf bawl and have you brother say, “that’s our herd.”  We learned how to work as a team, for the love of the land, family, and the pride of our brand.

What makes your heart skip a beat and race with excitement.
This question is easier. My heart skips a beat and races with excitement doing what I love;
  Taking great shots, while team roping, golfing, or with photography. I love catching someone's eye and without saying word a whole conversation happens, I love a hug from someone you care about, and the joy that comes from telling a good story.
Each day I appreciate the moments, those times when you make memories with family and friends.
I am thankful for the opportunities to be who I am; a pragmatic cowgirl with an optimistic heart.

  • I began competing as a team roper “before it was cool.”  There weren’t many women in the sport.  I love the affirmations I receive from young women who acknowledge my contribution to the sport, to the industry and as a mentor.  “They thank me for blazing the trail.”

  • I am proud to have created  other memorable brands and associations including the Gold Buckle Dreamin Rodeo and the Round Up Roping team roping association. Both associations are still active today,  growing and thriving in the community 20 years later.
How did you get where you are today?
That is a loaded question. The easy answer is one branch at a time.
I use the analogy of life being like a tree.  The things that happen to us in life are the branches.
I like seeing a tree with character; still growing, roots deep in tradition and values, anchored in strength, and strong enough to weather the storms.
You can say my tree has a few forks in the branches, but the good news is the older you get the more shade you provide, I guess you could call that experience, discovering your purpose and getting on to the business of living it.

  • They called me MA Gator, Judy Gator and MS Gator. Did not really matter it was a good time in my life and the start of Team roping as big business.
  • I am proud to have been the first to name ropes, give them personalities , and partner with endorses to help tell the story. 
  • Gator ropes hanging rubber Gator was a mark of distinction. Part of the brand it depicted the lay of the ropes . If my kids misbehaved I made them go punch Gators. If you would ask them they would tell you  that put a whole new meaning to being  PUNCHY!

•I am proud of helping bring Montana Silversmiths brand, products and their stories to market.  I am proud of Elmer and of the Pursuit of Excellence scholarship program we started and I am proud to be a part of the heartbeat of the Western Industry.

The term Ranch Grown Logic is hard to explain until you come face to face with the common sense of it all.

We were pushing cows and I had a horse who did nor want to cross a 3 ft wide ditch. I heard my brother on the other side say “Look at me, look up.”
 That was it, ranchgrownlogic; I knew it when I heard it. Look at where you want to go, not down, not at the issues that threaten, that you think are deep, swampy or rocky. Focus on your vision.
 I took a deep breath of confidence, for me and my horse, and I looked ahead.  I looked up at my brother on the hill.
One small leap for my horse resulted in one giant step for my appreciation of ranchgrownlogic! Its not rocket science, its common sense.
