Hoggan's House of Horror's Bull Maze

You can screen your relatives phone calls....but they still know where you live :)

It is a great day at the office. Busy processing orders and preparing packages to ship.

*Screened Dad twice this morning…..and then he showed up in my yard ….honking : )

When I went outside, I was instructed that they needed my eyes. Tommy (awesome neighbor, age 84ish) had been working on a truck the day before…left his call phone on the battery… and the truck had drove over 20 miles away to a haystack. So…they needed my eyes…to look for the phone as we drive 10mph looking alongside the road.

I’m a good sport. I give my best effort at finding a needle in a haystack for over an hour.

No luck so I come home and get back to work. Less than an hour later, I hear a knock at my door. I go to the door to see my 4yr old lil sister and my Dad pulling out of the yard. Ok, I can roll with the punches. Toys, treat, movie….We play…while I attempt to get some work done.

Phone rings...It is my Aunt Nancy but I really need to finish this up. I screen her. She calls again. I remember that she is headed to Montana so I answer in case of travel troubles. I answer. She is yelling….Hurry go outside!

J2 got bucked off & the horse is running your way. Running out the door with Penelope….just in time to see a riderless horse run into the yard.

Nancy and J2 show up in her car. She just happened to be rounding the corner when J2 got in his little wreck so she gathered him up & took off after the horse. J2 walks over to me, pretty shook up but not hurt. Here’s where it gets even cooler….J2 was riding down the road…looking for the MISSING PHONE! Lol…still no luck : )

Ok, back to the task at hand. Corner the mare up in the pasture. I hold the big bay so he can get back on and ride her in circles. She’s good just a little spooky. He rode her like a champ. I still didn’t want to send him by himself tho. (I never realized how awesome it was when I was little. My little brother Eric was only a few years younger than me. Dad always sent us together to do stuff…which was nice…because we could catch our horses when someone fell off : )

Ok, halter his horse & let her graze. I have got to get these packages to town before the Post Office closes! J2 &Penelope chillin while I wrap up loose ends. Scramble to get everything together. Can’t leave spooky bronc in the yard tied to fence so I get a trailer ride how. Wait. Wait Wait a little more! Load horse up…ship kids home…and head out. Make the post office just in the nick of time & even the movie rental without a fine! Ya!

Phone call from Dad’s wife…Bull is out an Grandma’s. Call up there to see if I need to come help get it in. No, it’s back over by where it’s supposed to be.

SILENCE PHONE so I can get some of the work done that I should’ve done during the day. Awesome, kick butt, take names & make some progress for a solid 2 hours. Glance at the phone…I missed numerous calls from 6 family members. Can I put Grandma to bed. Reply Yes to text and head up to her house. Someone else was called also so we both showed up. No worries. Visit. Grandma goes to bed. I head home. ….I DO NOT see anything out while as I drive by the corrals.

I’m not home 10 minutes & I see a facebook post about a Hamer Traffic Jam. Bulls and calves out on the road. Call to see if they need help. Reply is….Might as well. J

THIS IS WHERE the REAL FUN BEGINS
Grab a headlight (flashlight) and head out the door. (Yes, this is always the start of a good time!) . 2 neighbors are down there trying to get everything off the road. Pitch black out, with a flashlight strapped to my head, chasing an unknown number of bulls and calves through the cool night air. I head down go around the bulls out in a corner of the place. The plan is to send them up a feed alley & in a corral. This is a great idea….until I get back there.

It is REALLY DARK! When I get to the fence I need to climb through I come right up on a black bull that is still out. Well running into him spooks us both and he runs off into the night. I can see with my light good enough to run and navigate…but not good enough to see if I have all the bulls…or where they are at for sure. (At this point in time, I realize that after this moment...I will forever love the handsome young man who gave me a headlight for Christmas last year)

Well, when in doubt…I choose running & hollering like a maniac. There was also the use of my imaginary dog. Whistling like you have a ferocious dog that is heading there way…lol…with any luck maybe a stray will show up in the night : )

Regardless…IT WORKS! We are gathered…or I’m hoping I’ve got everything but what I have is headed at a high trot down the alley. Now at the end of the alley is guys standing to turn the bulls. Spot lights…a loud 4 wheeler…and 4 people…this is what we are heading towards. I am now running in a high sprint towards a bright spot light and yelling in my best “Bull Voice”. The cool part about this is…I can see when a bull is in front of the spot light but when they move over…I am BLINDED BY THE LIGHT! (yes, you can start singing now : ) Well, I don’t think the cattle can see very good either some are hesitating. I keep pushing. The thought crosses my mind….Now how am I going to explain….How I managed to run into a full size bull in the dark! : )

Well, most everything goes in. Apparently, Richard had a slight bull fighting bout…and 1 bull is still on the loose. I wasn’t sure if I got everything from down below but after a head count the black bull I spooked was the only other bull MIA.

Get the 2 bulls in with Richard only having to bull fight a little more : )

Now for the SORTING in the dark! I think this would be an AWESOME Haloween idea…Hoggan’s House of Horror's Bull Maze! See if you can survive the bull obstacle course…in the dark. Lol… Your adrenaline can really get rolling as you try to make plays to get bulls sorted in or by. Gathering ever pen on the place to sort and make a head count ….with a flashlight to make sure that every animal is accounted for.

Ok, this entire time I’m thinking …Now, I don’t mind being called to help…but I do prefer it be right now…after 9 o’clock I have No guilt that I should be doing other things. : ) I mean no light isn’t optimal but ….to be quite honest…I kinda liked it. Sick, I know…Fun rush to finish off the night and really make you appreciate the rest of the day!

We got the new calves unloaded. Everything was accounted for, fed a few mangers ...and called it a rap on a fun filled day :)

Thankful for never having a dull moment!

Thanks for traveling the Gypsy trail with me today!

p.s. Sorry...no photo...rockin the headlight is pretty awesome...maybe next time :)

This story happened October 20, 2011. I dug through the archives...& did find a headlight picture :) It was changing a fuse. Dillon Rodeo Banquet Circa 2008....but it will help give a visual for the whole sorting in the dark scenario

Invite all the neighbors over for a BLOCK PARTY, of course!!!

Nothing fancy, gather friends, family, and neighbors around the ol' wood stove stove to enjoy a lil' summer fun! We were able to get together for some neighborhood fun atleast 4 times and it was fabulous every time. Forgive me for the journal entry here but I had a few thoughts I'd jotted down the nights of our block parties and I just didn't want to forget the memories from this great summer!

Aug. 30, 2011: GREAT Block Party at the PINK House! THANK YOU so much to all my amazing neighbors. Great night with friends & family! I ♥ this town : )

Sept. 14, 2011: New block party players tonight! Thank you to Aunt Nancy, Annie and her crew for coming out to the block party.

Sept. 29, 2011: **GOOD NEWS: Block Party was a huge success! Over 20 neighbors gathered around the camp fire enjoying food, fun & great company! J2 even rode his horse down to the party. That's awesome! Also, I have superior fire starting skills. Got the camp fire rolling with 1 match, news paper, & kindling. (Much better than Regg & J2's failed attempts last time) **BAD NEWS: There was so much wood on the fire while cooking the hamburgers...I TOTALLY SINGED MY BANGS & EYEBROWS! Not all together a bad sacrifice for a good time

Pink House Proud

“PINK” House Proud

You might ask, What do I do when I actually spend a weekend at the Pink Palace?

Well, I put in a PINK sidewalk of course! (Ok, well I think most people call it red brick but …lets be real….It is PINK!) There are all kinds of colors involved in this project. “Going Green” & re-purposing , the bricks came off of the childhood home that I was raised in. So excited to give them a new life.

So excited! In the winter, which around here seems like it is 9 months out of the year, we have card games at the house. Well, there was no sidewalks and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get in the house without bogging through a muddy mess & slipping and sliding through the sticky clay by the back door. Last winter, my friend, Abby, wiped out on an attempt to make it inside. Let's just say, It was not optimal :) So Dad brought me down a wagon full of bricks from the old house and I got to work!

THANK YOU to J2, Lisa, Monte, Houston, Broc, a handy bull fighter and everyone who helped place a brick or two!

Here are a few “PINK” House Proud pictures. Lovin my new sidewalk!

Welcome to the PINK PALACE :)
Newly added ~ Matching PINK sidewalk and rock garden "BRONCY" rock garden~
with a rocky arena like this....lots of extra incentive to ride!

Wonder where this path might lead :)

Hmmm, what fun! I wonder what kind of FUN could be had with this path

& a fire pit?!?!

Thank you for visiting the gypsy trail. Wishing you safe travels!

2011 Nevada Run

Ok, I’m getting exhausted just thinking about all the summer fun! Even this fall was busy on the rodeo trail! (I’m gonna summarize & get this little tale wrapped up)

For the 1 st time since….I don’t even know when….I didn’t go to the Dillon Labor Day Rodeo! Now the fun stories that have been created in Dillon…this is almost a tragedy but the rodeo trail was calling so I went! BLESSED that spring rodeo cancellations had been rescheduled, I loaded up and headed to Wells, NV with Hoggan Rodeo.

Friday: Wells, Nevada - Drive from Idaho & feed stock when we get there

Meet the new crew that we'll be rodeoing with. Seem ok. Nice looking, if nothing else. lol...they grew on me by the time it was all said & done.

Saturday: Well, Nevada – Slack & Rodeo

Sort, load, run up the alley, run down the alley, re-sort, fix my mess ups....well...you get the picture. :)

LOVE Rodeoing with Regg! He is awesome! We are always on the same page & he makes every task go better just cuz we're doing it together!

THANK YOU to Wells, NV for having us! Hard working committee that took such great care of us. Matt rocks! Thank you also to the Mike Morrison Family! Not only are they good pickup men, they are just down right amazing people! Honored to call them friends!

Sunday: Wells, Nevada – Slack & drive back to Hamer,Idaho

No, I did not make it to the annual barbeque at Donna's Ranch. Yes, it is rumored that they still know me on a 1st name basis there.

David & I had a tire FALL OFF the Trailer on the way home. FYI: those get super super hot & are really heavy! It was just he & I. I happened to be the only one with gloves. Still burnt my hands trying to get it packed to the truck bed. Moral of the story: Next time I won't pack gloves ;) Limped it home on 3 tires. Aww, livin the dream on the rodeo trail!

Monday: Blackfoot, ID – IMPRA FINALS RODEO

It is an honor to be nominated to time the finals for the IMPRA association. Thankful for the opportunity to have a job and work with my Aunt Nancy

Tuesday: Blackfoot, ID – Fair food and the IMPRA Finals Rodeo. Yes, I ate more than one human should in a week. Yes, I tried the Donut Bacon Burger (Glazed Donuts instead of buns), Chocolate covered bacon, Strawberry Jam on my Turkey sandwich, and just about every weird thing you could imagine.

Wednesday: Drive to Elko Nevada & RODEO

Ok, so on the drive down I'm pretty sure I was running on not enough sleep...because I specifically remember putting on makeup in the car ....& Trying to convince David that he should let me put some on him. Seriously, I tried for atleast 15 minutes. lol....green eyeliner would compliment his red beard nicely :)

Thursday: Elko, NV – Slack and Rodeo

Everyday on the rodeo trail, always an adventure. Pretty sure the bullfighter was getting sick of sorting with me but I was the what he was stuck with. Worked pretty good together by the time it was all said and done.

Friday: Elko, NV Slack, Rodeo and OVERNIGHT to Lovelock, NV

Thank you to Mr. Tate Else for stopping by the rodeo to say hello! Love my Montana friends always!

Big day! Slack, Perf, Load the Trucks, and head down the road to the next one. I rode with David in the semi. The other 2 horse trailers broke down along the way they were quite a ways behind us.

Pulling into a new rodeo grounds in the dark, no idea where the loading chute is, how the pens are laid out, and trying to get unloaded around the small civilization of rodeo contestants that have set up camp at the grounds.

David gets on the truck to send me livestock to put in pens for the night. Nice men had fed some pens and we were just trying get everything to a pen with hay in it for the night. Stumbling around in the dark….the bulls were supposed to come steaming off the semi trailer….just as they’ve hit a high trot…..I’m supposed to stand in front of them to turn them around. Oh and the spot where I’m supposed to turn them from is a gate leading to a pen full of hay. Ya, that didn’t work. 1 in the morning, tired & hungry…they blew right over the top of me. Now, I’m trying to push them back out of this big ol pen….& off of feed. I get one side moving ….& then the other side is turning back on me. It was a vicious cycle. Yelling in my loudest bull voice & trying to get them pushed back. Finally a nice man comes to help me move them out. 2 people ended the circling cycle. However, in the dark, in completely foreign corrals…I hit a small hole….ankle gives out & WIPE OUT completely as a set of bulls is trying to come back. Yes, I’m sure it was as funny looking as it sounds : ) Luckily, it spooked the bulls and they moved out.

Never a dull moment : ) Thank you to Aunt Crystal who took us to the gas station at 2:30 a.m. to grab a bite to eat. Best lunchable ever!

Saturday: Lovelock, NV Slack, Rodeo, DANCE

2 hours to do the draw (yes, it was getting worse), Run cattle through, Slack, and then start all over for the performance. THANK YOU to the amazing committee! They were rockstars and so wonderful to work with! A special thank you to Colby, who ran the out gate and stripping chute! She is AWESOME! Thank you to Jim who ran stock out, helped sort, and ran cattle up the return alley for us. Blessed to meet so many amazing people on the rodeo trail.

David came down with a bug of some sort and was sick so I got to flank. I’m not gonna lie, I just love to rodeo and it doesn’t matter what job I’m doing, I usually am having a good time but….I DO LOVE when I get to Flank and everything goes well! Makes my heart happy : )

Lil’ Puker: So I’m standing on the bucking chute and I turn back to let the cowboy that he would be the first contestant out. He nods…..I thought he was spitting out his chew….NOPE…He was PUKING his guts out right by the chute! Holy mackrell, seriously! Lol…It’s a good thing David wasn’t there. He would’ve “chain reaction puked”

Dance! Dance! Dance!

The Senior Pro Rodeo Ass. contestants pretty much know how to have a good time. They are seasoned professionals. Laurette Cockburn is my HERO! She is an AMAZING runner in the 60+ Ribbon Roping event, can dance like no bodies business, and just an all-around good time! Such a LIGHT, she brightens the room with her smile and makes everyone in her glow feel just a lil’ more excited about life! Love her! I gave up on trying to keep up with them but I did follow the example of HAVING FUN!

Danced with a 69 year old CHAMPION Calf Roper. He's won the calf roping that day and was pretty much Bad A! A handsome young man and I even made a few twirls around the dance floor. Aunt Crystal, Carol, and I cut a rug for a few songs. I do have a confession to make…lol…I’m pretty sure when the music got really rolling….I was doing moves that ….well…pretty sure Zumba is the only word you could use to describe them…lol…. : )

GREAT NIGHT with friends wearing a big ol’ beaming SMILE all night long!

Sunday: Lovelock, NV –Slack & Rodeo

Another day on the rodeo trail, I got to flank again. David was there but pretty sure he just thought that kid might puke again : )

Last day of the rodeo run so everyone was pulling out and heading home. A rodeo grounds is like an empty cemetery after the rodeo is over. Silence fills the air and only memories remain. It was so quite that you could hear the rain hitting the ground before I even felt it. Pitter pattering as it collided with the hard dry Nevada ground.

Saying good bye to the crew, who was now Rodeo Family. Thank you for a great rodeo run!

Monday: Drive from Lovelock to Hamer, ID

I wrote a little bit about loading out to go home that morning.
Here is a link to: Loadin' Up

Yes, all of these driving miles were with my Uncle David so feel free to sympathize for all the quality bonding time he had to spend with me : ) THANK YOU to David & HOGGAN RODEO for the opportunity to work!

COWBOY APPROVED Sandwich

Who knew that one lil' loaf of bread could bring so many smiles! Whipped up a loaf of Uncle Jim's Famous Beer Batter Bread yesterday. It was fabulous, sliced up and shared the delicousness with a UPS man, vet, pretty lady, bachelor, aunt and friends working in spuds!

Here is a lil' concoction that I whipped up this fall. Even my DAD likes these sandwiches ....& he doesn't like anything I cook! Seriously though, hot & delicous...I don't know how you could go wrong with the characters in this "Cowboy Approved" Grilled Ham & Cheese!

Her is a Link to Uncle Jim's Famous Beer Bread also:
http://rodeotalesgypsytrails.blogspot.com/2011/09/uncle-jims-famous-beer-batter-bread.html
COWBOY APPROVED SANDWICH ~ Hot Grilled Ham & Cheese Panini
Slice up a delicious Beer Bread

I like to make mine on the serving plate so I have less dishes to do.

Let the topping begin! Cheddar CHEESE, but not just any cheese. Cheese from the feed store in Terreton, ID, from a local dairy! Seriously, it is the BEST & the price is equally impressive!
Thin layer on the Both Sides.
(I like to put them both on now so you don't have to mess with the orange cheese again )

Next Layer with a few pieces of sandwich meat ham
(A homecooked ham is BEST but honestly, that will probably only happen at my house with holiday leftovers)
Living right on the edge, LAYER UP some PEPPERJACK cheese!
(Also, from the Stockman's Feedstore)

Slice up Mushrooms & put right on top of the pepperjack.
They cook right up in the middle!

A few more pieces of Ham!
Stack your last layer of Cheddar
(you already put on the other side of the bread earlier)

Oh my, look at that Tower of Tastiness!
Top with last piece of bread & put on the grill.

I use the George Foreman Grill & LOVE IT!
Worked great for grilling taco shells too!

Leave it on until your bread is browned up & crispy delicousness on top!

Taa Daa, your COWBOY APPROVED Sandwich is finished!
Works great to wrap in tin foil & take to Dad at work. The grilled part stay crispy & is delicious!

Make up a batch and share the Tower of Tastiness with someone lucky today!
UPDATE ~ HOTTER COWBOY APPROVED SANDWICHAdd a layer of thin sliced Jaleponos....so tasty....with a little extra kick!
Want to change it up ~THAT GIRL APPROVED ~
My favorite version of this sandwich
:
Use Turkey ~ Grill up the same or just use pepper jack cheese
When it comes off the grill, ADD STRAWBERRY JAM!
Oh my, the spicy pepper jack & sweet strawberry are delightful
Sometimes I even add some lettuce when I'm feelin real spunky :)

Good luck & enjoy your new tasty sandwich duo!
Fix it for your fussy Cowboy & see the what they think

Hometown Fair & Rodeo

Mud Lake Fair and Rodeo:

The 2 nd weekend in August is a BIG WEEKEND in Jefferson County, Id: FAIR TIME! Love this time of year! Empty panels, buildings, booths, and a grass lot are transformed into a bustling community gathered together to celebrate a year of hard work! 4H projects are proudly on display. Pigs, steers, and sheep in TOP condition compete for the Grand Champion Title. An area that normally has only one or two restaurant choices is now a mecca for fine dining. The WJ high school rodeo club is set up with square ice cream cones and cute girls to serve you. Famous Hamer Hoagies from the McGarry family and the most AMAZING Mexican food ever….are just a few of your cuisine options.

(Seriously, there was a booth selling tacos that I was addicted to! I had them on Wednesday…thought about having more about 30 minutes more but they were closed. I ate them like 4 days in a row and even dreamed about them 1 night! I was convinced that they must have some addictive in them cuz I was obsessed! We fondly referred to them as Cocaine Tacos the rest of the weekend! Oh they were so good! ….drooling just thinking about it!....so I got sidetracked….Now…back to the rodeo trail!)

Now, as you know, I go to lots of rodeos throughout the summer. I wear many different hats…Timer, Truck driver, Hay feeder, Flank hanger, Stripping Chute runner…just to name a few. This week is particularly special for me because I have the opportunity to be the Stock Contractor and provide the stock for the Mud Lake Rodeo! This is a rodeo that I’ve been wondering around the back pens since I was little so it is such a privilege to be able to work with my community to put on a great hometown rodeo!

THANK You to Don and Cherly Bird, Dave Burtenshaw & the ENTIRE Burtenshaw family, Regg and McKell Carpenter family, Crystal Carpenter, Nancy Durham, Matt Mecham, Barney Carpenter, and all the volunteers that work so hard to make the fair and rodeo a success!

THANK YOU to my AMAZING RODEO CREW! Bull fighters, Justin and Mark Scherer, Pickup men Bret and Lincoln Zollinger, Jaron Palmer….I couldn’t have asked for any better! Perfect at their jobs and ALWAYS go above and beyond the call of duty! THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to J2 Hoggan, Dusty Peterson family, and Ms Savannah McGarry for ALL of your help! You are rock stars and I couldn’t do it without you! Regg, J2 and the Peterson crew spent countless hours loading and hauling stock into the fair grounds.

At one point, Dusty, Jeramiah and J2 where bringing bulls at a high lope up the alley to load on the semi….while I stood on top of the roof waving a sorting stick to detour from the jumping on top of the roof….again. : )

That is just one of the super exciting stock contracting moments we had along the rodeo trail. The very wildest I only heard about…but I’ll give you what I heard. : ) Saturday night performance has come to a close. The crew and I are hustling to get animals fed and put to bed. There were a few turn outs in the bulls so I helped Savannah set up to roll them thru and back in with the rest of the herd. Gates are all ready to go. I leave to go write checks. …….well apparently….this is where it got interesting! 1 st bull rolls thru like clockwork. 2 nd bull is only one chute gate behind….but in this amount of time…CALAMITY STRIKES! Bronc rider, thinks that was the last bull and absent mindedly CLOSES the gate….putting himself RIGHT IN FRONT of the BULL and lets the BULL behind the chutes! This bull is less than friendly and definitely wouldn’t be my pick if I needed to be in close quarters with one. The bull strolling through guys gear bags and all kinds of people! Screaming, jumping up on the chutes out of the line of fire! Well this is great grand and wonderful but there is only ONE way out from behind the chutes …..and that is through a tiny tiny tiny man gate….and to get to it you have to go down a skinny little path next to the stripping chutes! To this day, I will NEVER know how they got THAT BULL through THAT GATE…pretty sure he even rolled right by a small child, and let him untouched….as he went down the small path and through the little date! All I can say is….Our guardian angels are HANDY!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU again to the entire Mud Lake, Terreton, Hamer, and Monteview community! THANK YOU to all of the talented rodeo contestants that competed, ALL the RODEO FANS, and everyone who works so hard year round to continue the hometown tradition of our Fair & Rodeo!

THANK YOU to John & Cody Spencer, Boedie Evans, and J2 Hoggan for all your help sorting and loading out to go home. Long hot day and I appreciated all of your help!

THANK YOU! LOVIN the RODEO TRAIL!
